Most Memorable Guest of Oprah

During Oprah Winfrey’s twenty-five year reign as television’s most influential talk show host, the world was introduced to thousands of celebrities, politicians, newsmakers, and ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Oprah interviewed more than twenty-seven thousand people, talking to them about their lives and their work. While it is difficult to pick one guest from all of these interviews, there are some absolute stand-out moments that will forever be a part of pop-culture history.

David Smith, Husband of Susan Smith

Fifteen years ago, the world watched and prayed as Susan and David Smith, of Union, South Carolina, went on national Television to plea with the man Susan said had stolen her car with her children in the back seat. Days later, Susan would make another appearance, confessing that she, herself, had drowned her own children. Oprah made a visit to Union, in order to understand how a thing like this could ever happen.

Her stunning interview with David, five years later, still stands out as one of the most emotionally compelling moments she and an interview subject have shared. As she gets David to talk about his own life after the deaths of his children, he opens up about his feelings of betrayal by his wife, the depression he has suffered, including thoughts of suicide, and the hope he finds in the eyes of his new daughter, and the difficulty he has in trying to explain to his daughter what happened to the brothers she never knew. By the end of this emotional interview, they are both in tears.

Chimp Attack Victim Charla Nash

The world watched in horror of news reports featuring the gruesome mauling of Charla Nash by a friend’s pet chimpanzee. With almost every bone in her face broken, her nose and eyes ripped from her face, it was a miracle that she survived the attack. Although Charla Nash chooses to wear a veil, and even had guards at her house from keeping tabloid photographers from snapping a shot of her, she agreed to unveil her face during her interview with Oprah. Nash then went on to speak about the real dangers of owning exotic, wild animals.

Tom Cruise

Some moments make a career for guests on the Oprah Winfrey show. Other moments create havoc for guest stars. Tom Cruise will be forever remembered as jumping up and down around the set and on Oprah’s couch, proclaiming his love for soon-to-be wife Katie Holmes. Cruise’s antics on that episode forced some in Hollywood to consider his state of mind. To this day, comedy skits and parodies are made about this event.

The Most Memorable Guest of All Time

The most watched episode of the Oprah Winfrey show, and in fact, the fourth most watched moment in television history, was Oprah’s now famous interview with Michael Jackson. The public thirsted for a glimpse into the life of the reclusive, reticent superstar, Michael Jackson, and Oprah offered this glimpse during her interview with him at his Neverland Ranch. This was the first interview Jackson had granted in nearly fifteen years. During the interview, he spoke of his lonely childhood and the love he held for his family. He also dismissed rumors of buying the Elephant Man. Based on viewership statistics, alone, Michael Jackson definitely stands out as Oprah’s most memorable guest.

One of the more traditional ways to have fun with your family is the family game night, where one night a week everyone gets together and plays a board game. This is a good activity because it gets everyone sitting at the table together which promotes communication. For those who think that board games cannot hold their attention, game night can consist of coming together and playing games on the Nintendo Wii or Xbox Kinect, which both have plenty of games designed for the whole family to play.

Another one of the ways to have fun with your family that is cheap and great to do on a beautiful day is go to the zoo. The zoo is a great activity because they have something for everybody. Everyone in the family may have a different animal they want to see, but since they are all in one place at the zoo it can bring the family together.

Pick a show that everybody likes, and watch it together whenever it is on. This will bring your family closer, and it will also provide everyone with common ground for small talk; thus improving communication within the family. The best types of shows are game shows, as they are the most interactive. Some game shows like Family Feud and Minute to Win it are competitions between families, so those families who like those shows can bond by training to be competitors.

Visit the State Park

Enjoying nature is one of the best ways to have fun with your family since it removes all the distractions of today’s technologically driven world. It forces communication among the family and provides plenty of opportunities for bonding. The state park will offer various nature-based activities for you and your family. You can choose to hunt depending on the season, or fish in the lakes and streams. There are plenty of trails to be hiked, birds to be watched, and cliffs to jump off of.

The case that Phil’s consulting firm took on was successful and Winfrey was very grateful.

As her way of saying thank you, Oprah had Phil appear on her show and because the audience seemed to take such a liking to him, she decided to hire him for another project. In 1998, Dr. Phil became her life and strategy expert on the show and he appeared weekly to talk about a number of issues. Why is Oprah So Popular With Middle Class Women

A large majority of Oprah’s viewers have been middle-class women and one reason why they are attracted to Oprah’s shows is because she makes it comfortable for them to discuss personal issues that they would otherwise feel embarrassed to discuss. For example, there was an episode where Oprah had a discussion with women whose husbands had undergone a sex change, and on another episode she discussed the lives of married women who appeared to have an excellent middle-class life but underneath this mask were women who struggled with gambling addictions, pornography addictions, depression, suicidal feelings and shopping addictions. Oprah took the mask off the ideal that if you married well and entered a comfortable situation financially, everything would be okay.

Female Financial Empowerment

  • One can’t watch a few episodes of Oprah without realizing her message of financial empowerment to middle-class women, and this is another reason why some middle-class women are attracted to the show. The fact that Oprah now has billions of dollars through her show, magazine, website and her own cable network is enough inspiration alone.
  • Oprah often tells middle-class women that they need to build their own financial future, and she does this by inviting financial experts such as Suze Orman to appear on the show.
  • On another episode Oprah chose a few everyday families who were in debt to get on a “debt diet”, where they cut unnecessary spending and looked for ways to increase income.
  • Oprah has also profiled up-and-coming female entrepreneurs who specialized in products such as cupcakes, shoes, undergarments and personal services for the underserved in their communities. She also profiled females who started nonprofit organizations for the purpose of empowering other middle-class females.

Revolutionizing Relationships

  • Oprah has a lot to say about mending broken relationships and since middle-class women are interested in this topic, this is another reason why she’s popular with them.
  • On many of Oprah’s shows, she encourages women not to look to a romantic relationship or marriage as their source of emotional fulfillment. There have been numerous testimonies from female viewers who thanked Oprah for freeing them from the bondage of people-pleasing in their relationships.
  • Oprah sometimes confronts women who have hurt loved ones by respectfully letting them know how their own beliefs affect their actions towards loved ones. With Oprah middle-class women can see a psychologist for free and on a daily basis.

Oprah’s Celebration of Middle-Class Lifestyle

  • When Oprah isn’t discussing thought-provoking issues that middle-class women are interested in, she’s celebrating the joys of middle-class life. This is evident of her annual “My Favorite Things” episodes, where she describes the latest grown-up toys and gives them away to the audience.
  • There are also times when she invites interior designers to the show to help middle-class women decorate and clean their homes properly while other guests appear on the show to teach the women lessons on fashion etiquette.
  • Oprah realizes that middle-class women enjoy their favorite celebrities so periodically she invites stars such as John Travolta, Whoopi Goldberg, Diane Keaton Chris Rock, Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson.

How Many Careers Were Started Because of Oprah?

  • Oprah’s Power

Blessed are those whom Oprah favors, cursed are the ones she disparages.   The Queen of Daytime Talk, with the highest rated talk show in U.S. television history, is very vocal about those whom she likes.  She has used her show to propel the careers of several people, including Dr. Phil McGraw, Rachel Ray, Dr. Oz and many others.  Here, a look at some of the people who were helped career-wise through their association with Oprah Winfrey.

  • Dr. Phil McGraw

In 1995, Oprah was involved in a lawsuit with cattle farmers because of negative remarks she made about beef, comments which ranchers said caused a drop in beef prices.  She hired Dr. Phil McGraw’s legal consulting firm to help her prepare for trial.  The case ended in 1998, and Oprah invited Dr. Phil to appear on her show.  With his no-nonsense, tough love approach to advice giving, Dr. Phil was an instant success. He appeared weekly on The Oprah Winfrey Show, branding himself a “Relationship and Life Strategy Expert.”   His career has skyrocketed since his first appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show: he has his own syndicated talk show, and he has published four best-selling books. He is devoted to helping people make their lives better, and with each show, he takes on issues that real people face, such as domestic violence and bullying.   Because of Oprah Winfrey, Dr.Phil is the most well-known mental health specialist in the world.

  • Rachael Ray

Racheal Ray, the celebrity cook (she refuses to call herself a “chef”), also had a career launched by exposure on The Oprah Winfrey Show.  Ray signed a deal with Winfrey’s Harpo Productions in 2005, and the Rachael Ray Show premiered in September, 2006.  Between the time she signed the contract and the airing of her show, Ray made several appearances on Oprah’s show, which were calculated to enhance her appeal and gain her viewers.  Oprah was deliberately making a celebrity, just like she did with Dr. Phil.  Now, in addition to the Rachael Ray Show, Ray has three Food Network series, and a magazine Everyday With Rachael Ray.  She has also written several cookbooks, and she is one of the best-known culinary names in the world.

  • Dr. Oz

Dr. Mehmet Oz is a Turkish-American heart surgeon who first appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2004.   He found a ready audience for his personal health advice.  In 2009, Harpo Productions launched The Dr. Oz Show, which was a huge success.  Since then, Dr. Oz has written six bestselling books and several magazine articles.  Because of his relationship with Oprah, Dr. Oz is one of the most trusted and respected source of health information.

  • Suze Orman

Orman was already a successful financial advisor, author, motivational speaker and television host, but her career was catapulted by Oprah.  She is the kind of get-tough motivational speaker that Winfrey is famous for embracing (a la Dr. Phil).  Now, Orman is more successful and well-known than ever, thanks to Oprah.  Orman has millions of readers of her financial advice column for O, The Oprah Magazine.

  • Bob Greene

Bob Greene is Oprah’s personal trainer and fitness expert; he is another person who has cashed in on his relationship with Oprah.  Now famous, he has written weight loss and nutrition best-sellers, along with cookbooks.  He is also a contributing writer for Oprah’s magazine.

  • Nate Berkus

Berkus is an interior designer who appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show for a makeover segment.  Since then, he has become Winfrey’s design expert with his own line of home products and a TV show.

  • Gayle King

King is Oprah’s best friend, and her association with the legendary talk show host has paid off handsomely.  King is Editor-at-Large for Oprah’s magazine, and she has her own radio talk show that is broadcast by Oprah’s network.

  • People Oprah Has Made

Oprah seems to have her finger on the pulse of what Americans want, whether it be tough psychological or financial advice, personal fitness, cooking or decorating.  She has been instrumental in “making” the careers of many people.
